Job description:
At Schlaegle Design Build, we don’t just build architectural woodwork, we engineer environments that inspire. As one of Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing firms, we’ve scaled from a basement start-up to a multi-million-dollar operation with projects across the eastern seaboard. Now we’re looking for a Director of Operations who thrives in growth, demands accountability, and can transform complexity into flawless execution.
This is not a maintenance role, it’s a leadership seat for someone ready to own performance, drive profitability, and scale a company that’s rewriting what’s possible in our industry.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Direct and oversee daily operations across production, installation, logistics, and support teams.
- Implement and refine processes that guarantee projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean and EOS principles.
Financial & Performance Management
- Own and track operational scorecards and KPIs (throughput, labor efficiency, contribution margin).
- Partner with Finance on forecasting, WIP, backlog, and project profitability.
- Anticipate and correct slippage before it impacts results.
Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead, mentor, and develop department heads in production, install, engineering, and purchasing.
- Hold teams accountable to both performance and cultural values.
- Build a culture of safety, problem-solving, and clear communication.
Strategic Growth
- Drive facility expansion, equipment investments, and ERP (Innergy) optimization.
- Evaluate and implement technology that accelerates efficiency.
- Support executive leadership in setting and achieving long-term growth goals.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive leadership in operations (manufacturing, construction, or millwork preferred).
- Track record of driving measurable impact on profitability, efficiency, and growth.
- Strong grasp of Lean, Theory of Constraints, or process improvement methodologies.
- ERP/MRP expertise (Innergy or equivalent strongly preferred).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, scaling environment—willing to roll up sleeves when needed.
Expected Outcomes:
Financial & Quality Excellence
- Margin Control: Maintain project slippage at ≤10% and Cost of Quality (COQ) at ≤2%.
- Inventory Integrity: Achieve 100% count accuracy and ensure all goods are correctly allocated to Work Orders.
- Process Discipline: Oversee strict adherence to the formal job closeout and monthly planning cycles.
Strategic Leadership
- Team Development: Elevate management effectiveness by reinforcing structured planning, anticipatory problem-solving, and results-driven leadership.
- Accountability: Integrate into the Senior Leadership Team and hold managers accountable to clear, data-driven KPIs.
- Mentorship: Coach mid-level managers to improve high-level decision-making and operational skills.
Operational Systems
- Single Source of Truth: Ensure 100% organizational adoption of Innergy; eliminate shadow spreadsheets and ensure all data flows through the ERP.
- Operational Rhythm: Standardize monthly planning and closeout rituals to ensure financial and resource readiness.
What We Offer:
- up to $120,000 annual salary (including profit sharing)
- Health, dental, vision, and retirement benefits
